The biological effects of IL-11 depend upon the cellular microenvironment [1]. Biological functions include regulation of cellular proliferation and differentiation and progression of several carcinomas. In mice IL-11 is essential for sucessful embryonic implantation and development, and decidualization of endometrial stroma cells. In humans, deficient IL-11 production is related to a decreased fertility rate.
