Sphingosine kinase 2 (SK2) phosphorylates sphingosine to generate sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) and also phopshorylates the synthetic sphingosine analogue FTY720 [4]. FTY720 phosphate acts as an immunosuppressant by inhibiting the normal activation of S1P receptors by S1P which would normally stimulate T-lymphocyte egress from the lymph nodes [3]. ROMe is another synthetic sphingosine analogue with potential immunosuppressant/antineoplastic action [2].
