vinpocetine is an approved drug
Compound class:
Synthetic organic
Comment: Vinpocetine is a semisynthetic derivative of the vinca alkaloid vincamine [3].
Ligand Activity Visualisation ChartsThese are box plot that provide a unique visualisation, summarising all the activity data for a ligand taken from ChEMBL and GtoPdb across multiple targets and species. Click on a plot to see the median, interquartile range, low and high data points. A value of zero indicates that no data are available. A separate chart is created for each target, and where possible the algorithm tries to merge ChEMBL and GtoPdb targets by matching them on name and UniProt accession, for each available species. However, please note that inconsistency in naming of targets may lead to data for the same target being reported across multiple charts. ✖ |

Summary of Clinical Use |
Vinpocetine is approved internationally, but use in the US is restricted to dietary supplements. Vinpocetine is used to treat cerebrovascular disorders and age-related memory impairment. This is based on its reported ability to increase cerebral blood-flow [5] and produce a neuroprotective effect. |
Mechanism Of Action and Pharmacodynamic Effects |
Inhibition of phosphodiesterase (PDE) type-1 by vinpocetine is believed to underlie its blood-flow enhancing effect [1,6]. The compound's neuroprotective effect is thought to be due to its Inhibition of voltage-sensitive Na+ channels [4]. |
