Used in the treatment of peptic ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome and the relief of abdominal or stomach spasms or cramps. US FDA marketing approval for clidinium (trade name Quarzan®) has been discontinued.

Mechanism of action is thought to be primarily due to inhibition of the muscarinic actions of acetylcholine on M1 muscarinic receptors located postganglionically at parasympathetic neuroeffector junctions.
