Malaria Pharmacology Comments |
Type II NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase (NDH2) is an enzyme in the mitochondrial electron transport chain that is not present in mammals but is found in many species including those of the malaria parasite. It has been considered to be a promising antimalarial drug target for a number of years, but a recent study questions this with the demonstration that PfNDH2 is not essential in the asexual blood stages of P. falciparum development [2]. In the P. berghei mouse model, NDH2 has been shown to be essential for sporogony inside the mosquito vector and may be required for malaria transmission [1]. |
