IFN-γ1b is approved to treat chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) [3] and severe, malignant osteopetrosis [2]. In 2007, the EMA granted orphan designation for the use of interferon gamma to treat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. The product also has EMA and FDA orphan designation for the treatment of Friedreich’s ataxia [4]..

IFN-γ1b activates interferon receptors and induces expression of genes with antiviral, antibacterial, antiapoptotic, antitumor, and immunomodulatory effects [1,5]. The molecular mechanism underlying the clinical benefit of IFN-γ1b therapy is poorly understood.
