Mechanism Of Action and Pharmacodynamic Effects
In its natural form, the endogenous peptide BNP binds to the guanylate cyclase receptor in vascular smooth muscle and endothelial cells. This leads to the relaxation of smooth muscle through increasing intracellular concentrations of guanosine 3'5'-cyclic monophosphate. This in turn leads to the dilation of veins and arteries.
