Pivampicillin was widely marketed in a number of European countries but is currently only approved for use in Denmark. It is used in the treatment of infections caused by ampicillin-sensitive bacteria, including upper and lower respiratory infections, gastrointestinal infections and uncomplicated gonorrhea, caused by penicillin-sensitive strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Pivampicillin can cause a decrease in serum carnitine [2].
