Orally administered ceftibuten dihydrate was marketed in the US (under the trade name Cedax®) but has been discontinued. It was used to treat otitis media, tonsillitis and acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis.

In common with other β-lactams, ceftibuten binds to penicillin-binding proteins leading to inhibition of bacterial cell wall synthesis and resulting in bacterial cell lysis and death.
