The P. falciparum enzyme serine hydroxymethyltransferase (PfSHMT) is involved in folate recycling. It is part of the deoxythymidylate synthesis cycle where dTMP is biosynthesized and the oxidized folate compounds generated are recycled by synchronized cooperation of PfSHMT and bifunctional PfDHFR-TS. PfSHMT has recently been validated as a chemically tractable antimalarial drug target [2].
