Gene and Protein Information Comments
Several isoforms of human CD56 have been identified. The longest protein, isoform 5, is listed in the table above. The Entrez gene; 4684 and Uniprot: P13591 records have further details of all of the isoforms currently identified. We also list the longest isoform (3) of the mouse CD56 protein (Entrez Gene, Uniprot P13595).

Immunopharmacology Comments
CD56 is expressed by neurons, glia, skeletal muscle and natural killer (NK) cells. The CD56bright NK cell subset, predominantly present in secondary lymphoid tissues, are capable of high levels of cytokine production, are enriched at inflammatory sites [1], and may have immunoregulatory function [2].
Cell Type Associations
Immuno Cell Type:  Natural killer cells
Cell Ontology Term:   CD16-negative, CD56-bright natural killer cell, human (CL:0000938)
Immuno Process Associations
Immuno Process:  Inflammation
Immuno Process:  Cytokine production & signalling
Immuno Process:  Barrier integrity
General Comments
CD56 is used as an immunohistochemical marker for neuroendocrine tumours.
