ATP-induced IL-1β release via activation of P2X7 is believed to contribute to neuroinflammation and pain [2,9], mood disorders [5], epilepsy [4] and neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease [3] and multiple sclerosis [10]. Therefore, inactivation of the ion channel by an antagonist may ameliorate inflammatory aspects of these conditions.
