Mechanism Of Action and Pharmacodynamic Effects Click here for help
MAOIs increase presynaptic levels of monoamines by inhibiting their catabolism after presynaptic reuptake. Therefore, inhibiting MAOs, increases the levels of serotonin and catecholamine neurotransmitters (epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine) in neurones of the central and sympathetic nervous systems. This action appears to restore the relative deficiencies of catecholamines or suppressed serotonin/norepinephrine signalling postulated to be causative in depressive conditions.
