Anakinra is used to treat the symptoms of moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis and may also help slow the progress of the disease. This drug is usually tried after treatment with other arthritis medications has been unsuccessful.

Anakinra mimics the action of endogenous IL-1 antagonist peptide (IL-1ra) and competitively inhibits IL-1 binding to the interleukin-1 type I receptor (IL-1RI), boosting the IL-1ra effect and thereby ameliorating the pathological effects of elevated IL-1 observed in rheumatoid arthritis (cartilage degradation and bone resorption).
