Aminopeptidases catalyze the cleavage of amino acids from the amino (N) terminus of protein or peptide substrates, and are involved in many essential cellular functions. Members of this enzyme family may be monomeric or multi-subunit complexes, and many are zinc metalloenzymes [3].

APN has been identified as a receptor for the human coronavirus (HCoV) serotype 229E [4]. APN is engaged by a receptor-binding domain that is located between amino acids 417 and 547 of the viral spike glycoprotein [1]. HCoV-229E is a cause of the common cold.
